Preserving Jewish History in West Feliciana
The Freyhan Center stands on the legacy of Julius Freyhan, a jewish immigrant businessman whose generosity helped shape early education in St. Francisville, LA. Known for supporting local farmers through difficult times, Freyhan left funds in 1904 to build the community’s first public school, later supplemented by his widow. The impressive brick building opened in 1905, and although it burned two years later, the community quickly rebuilt it with the same distinctive architecture and spirit of purpose.
For over 40 years students filled its classrooms, arriving on horseback, boarding in town during the week, or even crossing the Mississippi River by boat to attend school. Today, the restored Freyhan Center honors this remarkable history and celebrates the enduring impact of the Freyhan family’s vision for learning and community life in West Feliciana Parish.

The Future of the Freyhan Center
The Freyhan Center is moving forward with a series of thoughtful restoration phases that will help preserve the building’s character and strengthen its role as a cultural and educational resource.
